Level 1 and Level 2 Programmes

Level 1 and Level 2 Learning Programmes at De La Salle College

At De La Salle College, we want every student to feel valued, enjoy learning and take pride in their achievements. Our Level 1 and Level 2 Learning Programmes offer personalised pathways through Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle, shaped around each student’s strengths, interests and learning needs.

Through practical, purposeful learning, students develop communication, literacy, numeracy and everyday skills that support their wellbeing, independence and participation in school and community life.

A Programme Shaped Around Your Child

Each student’s programme builds on their abilities, with meaningful activities, appropriate support and goals that encourage progress. Level 1 and Level 2 offer different learning outcomes. The pathway selected reflects each student’s needs, allowing them to develop skills and demonstrate achievement at a suitable pace.

Learning During Junior Cycle

Junior Cycle programmes build foundations for further learning and daily life. They are organised around Priority Learning Units (PLUs), covering practical, personal, social and academic skills.

The Level 1 Learning Programme covers six areas:

  • Communication, Language and Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Personal Care and Wellbeing
  • Being Part of a Community
  • The Arts
  • Physical Education

The Level 2 Learning Programme covers five areas:

  • Communication and Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Personal Care
  • Living in a Community
  • Skills for Life

Learning connects these areas, giving students opportunities to practise several skills together. Suitable short courses and wider school activities also help students explore interests, build relationships and apply their learning.

Continuing into Senior Cycle

Senior Cycle Level 1 and Level 2 Learning Programmes are two-year pathways that build on Junior Cycle learning.

Students complete modules in Communication and Literacy, Numeracy and Personal Care, alongside elective modules chosen to reflect their interests, needs and goals.

There is a growing focus on using skills in daily life and preparing for adulthood, helping students communicate effectively, make choices, participate in their community and become more independent.

Recognising Progress

Assessment is ongoing. Students demonstrate their learning through practical tasks, projects, observations and portfolios of work. These help teachers recognise achievements, celebrate progress and plan the next steps.

At Senior Cycle, portfolio evidence supports assessment and certification. Successfully completed modules are certified by the State Examinations Commission (SEC).

Working Together with Families

Regular communication between home and school helps each programme reflect the student’s needs and progress.
Our Level 1 and Level 2 Learning Programme Coordinator, Simon O’Shea, works closely with students, families and staff to plan learning, review achievements and support transitions between stages of education.

We welcome your questions and insights as we work together to help your child grow in confidence and prepare for their next steps.
